Grant Funding Opportunities for Cities, Counties, and Special Districts

The following grant funding opportunities are currently available to special districts, cities, and counties. Several grants are available with upwards of $150 thousand in planning funds and $10 million in project funds. Eligible project types include stormwater management, hazard mitigation, agricultural land conservation, parks and green infrastructure, housing-related planning and zoning, and community development projects.

We will keep this list up-to-date and help cities, counties, and special districts identify eligible projects and develop competitive applications!

    EDA CARES Act Recovery Assistance

    • Funding Agency:
      Economic Development Administration
    • Eligible Applicants:
      States, counties, cities, special districts, and other entities
    • Funding Available:
      $600,000 - $3 million (average: $1.4 million)
    • Eligible Activities:
      Economic development strategies for recovery planning and resiliency (including diversifying local economies, businesses attraction and retention), and infrastructure
    • Deadline:
      None, applications are accepted on a rolling basis until funds are expended or September of 2022

    • Eligible Activities:
      Agricultural conservation acquisitions and planning that protects critical agricultural land at-risk of conversion

    Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) CARES

    • Funding Agency:
      CA Department of Housing and Community Development
    • Eligible Applicants:
      Non-entitlement cities, counties
    • Eligible Activities:
      Assistance to businesses and microenterprises impacted by COVID-19 stay-at-home orders and shut-downs, facility improvements related to COVID-19 healthcare and homeless housing needs, and acquisition of real property to be used for the treatment or recovery of infectious diseases in response to COVID-19.

    Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities

    • Funding Agency:
      FEMA
    • Eligible Applicants:
      Local governments with FEMA-approved Hazard Mitigation Plans
    • Funding Available:
      Up to $50M per grant application
    • Eligible Activities:
      Mitigation projects that increase resilience and public safety, reduce injuries and loss of life, reduce damage and destruction to property, critical services, facilities and infrastructure.
    • Deadline:
      Applicants should submit a Notice of Interest to Cal OES starting September 1 – September 18
