San Diego Opens First Public Park in Nearly a Decade
Harris & Associates provided project and construction management services for the new Fault Line Park
Members of the San Diego community gathered on August 28 to celebrate the grand opening of Fault Line Park, Downtown's first new park since 2008. Attendees included City of San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Councilman Todd Gloria, Civic San Diego, Pinnacle International Development, Harris & Associates and local Downtown residents.
Fault Line Park is located at 1433 Island Avenue between 14th and 15th streets. It is a 1.3-acre urban park with a cafe, seating, play areas for children and multi-purpose lawn and garden areas.
Construction of the park was made possible through a public-private partnership between Civic San Diego, the City of San Diego and developer Pinnacle International. Harris & Associates provided project and construction management services on behalf of Civic San Diego.
One of the most compelling features of the park is a public art installation by Po Shu Wang's art group Living Lenses titled "Fault Whisper". The installation includes two metal spheres situated on opposite sides of the Rose Canyon Fault. Park visitors are able to look through the west sphere's viewfinder to see if the opposite sphere has moved position. The piece also installed an accelerator into the fault below which monitors the earth's movements and converts the movements into musical notes which broadcast through the west sphere.
The public-private partnership will continue beyond the park's construction in the development of 956 homes including 72 affordable (rent and Income restricted) units, 22,000 square feet of commercial/retail space, and more than 1,000 underground parking spaces in a project known as Pinnacle On The Park.
