Harris and SANDAG Celebrate CMAA San Diego Chapter Project Achievement Award
The Sabre Springs/Peñasquitos Transit Station Project received an award in the Transportation / $5-$15 Million category
On April 16, the San Diego Chapter of the Construction Management Association of America hosted its annual awards banquet at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina.
The chapter recognized the Sabre Springs/Peñasquitos Transit Station Project in the category of Transportation, $5-$15 million. Harris & Associates served as the construction manager, working closely with design-builder McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. in collaboration with the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), Caltrans, and the City of San Diego.
To meet future parking demand associated with the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service scheduled to launch in the summer along the Interstate 15 (I-15) corridor, a total of 630 parking spaces were needed for the Sabre Springs/Peñasquitos Transit Station. Due to site constraints and right-of-way limitations, it was necessary to construct a multi-level parking structure.
Working adjacent to one of the busiest transportation corridors in the county was a daunting task. This transit station was a key piece of the transit infrastructure needed to support the launch of full BRT service in the summer of 2014. This station was upgraded from a Park and Ride lot with bus service to a next-generation, "state-of-the art" sustainable transit station with features including a photovoltaic system, electric vehicle charging stations, stormwater protection bioswales and more.
This project was designed and constructed to maximize open space, minimize heat-island effect, incorporate water-efficient landscaping, optimize energy performance (including the use of recycled/ regional materials), increase ventilation in the garage, and maintain open views to increase passive security using glass elevators and exterior stairways.
