    Irvine, CA -

Several of Harris & Associates recent Southern California projects have been recognized by leading industry associations. The projects consist of transportation, streetscape and storm drain improvements located in the cities of Anaheim, Santa Ana, West Hollywood and Redondo Beach.

City of West Hollywood, Sunset Strip Beautification

Harris & Associates provided professional engineering services on the $5.4 million Sunset Strip Beautification project for the City of West Hollywood. The project included the most extensive improvements to the boulevard since the iconic stretch of roadway was first paved in the 1930s. Harris assembled a design team composed of firms specializing in traffic engineering, pavement engineering, surveying and landscape architecture. In addition to resurfacing 1.6 miles of Sunset Boulevard, improvements were made to enhance the experience for pedestrians, including “bulb-out” sidewalks, pedestrian signal modifications, Sunset Strip Awardand crosswalk improvements. Tree districts were created by retaining and relocating as many of the existing trees as possible, and landscaping was added in the new medians. All of this was accomplished without losing the eclectic aesthetic of the original West Hollywood landmark.

    Industry awards include:

    • The 2010 American Public Works Association (APWA), Southern California Chapter, B.E.S.T. Project of the Year Award
    • The 2011 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch, Outstanding Private Sector Civil Engineering Project Award
    • The 2011 ASCE California Level/Region 9 Outstanding Community Improvement Project Award

City of Anaheim Thornton Brady Storm Drain Improvements

The Thornton Brady Storm Drain Improvements have been instrumental in mitigating severe flood hazards for residents in the West Anaheim Thornton/Brady neighborhoods. Anaheim Public Works and Engineering Services staff teamed with Harris & Associates to develop an innovative design and construct approximately 2,500 linear feet of an underground storm drain system with an overflow surface system. The collaboration efforts resulted in a cost-effective alternative to provide 25-year flood protection levels.

    Awards for this project include:

    • The 2012 Orange County Engineering Council (OCEC) Engineering Project Achievement Award
    • The 2012 ASCE Orange Country Branch, Project of Merit Award

City of Santa Ana Bristol Street Widening

This project received a 2011 OCEC Engineering Project Achievement Award and represents outstanding achievement in enhancing one of the most blighted streets in Orange County. The collaborative efforts of Santa Ana Public Works staff and the Harris & Associates team resulted in tremendous aesthetic and mobility improvements to create a signature transportation corridor in the heart of Orange County. The project involved widening Bristol Street from four to six travel lanes, and included right-of-way acquisitions, enhanced landscaping, and bus bay turnouts for future bus rapid transit.

City of Redondo Beach Esplanade Streetscape Project

This project received a 2011 APWA Southern California Chapter B.E.S.T. Project of the Year Award and represents outstanding achievement in improving the roadway aesthetics and functionality for various modes of transportation, including bicycles, pedestrians and motor vehicles in both the travel lanes and parallel parking lanes. The project involved pavement rehabilitation and streetscape enhancements along Esplanade from Knob Hill Avenue to Vista Del Mar consisting of artistic mosaics panels and tiles installed along the street, decorative sidewalk pavers, new street furniture, a new “seatwall” on top of the bluff, enhanced crosswalks and “bulb-out” sidewalks for improved pedestrian accessibility and safety, drought tolerant landscaping, and a dedicated bicycle lane.
