    Novato, CA -

Harris employee-owner Luella Gabriel organized a Harris team for the 10th Annual BioMarin – MPS 5K Run/Walk on September 23, 2012 in sunny Novato.  Almost $3,000 was raised by Harris.

The team was named “Team Sabrina” in honor of Luella’s daughter and included 40 members in a sea of over 200 participants. Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) and related diseases are genetic lysosomal storage diseases (LSD) caused by the body’s inability to produce specific enzymes. As a result, cells do not perform properly and may cause progressive damage throughout the body, including the heart, bones, joints, respiratory system and central nervous system (MPS Society).

The donations raised by the event are making a big difference in the lives of these MPS children.  A Natural History (placebo) study is currently underway in Minnesota for MPS-IIIB (which is what Sabrina has). The results from this study will lead to an actual drug being tested and hopefully approved in the near future. Hope is just around the corner and time is very valuable to these kids with this terminally progressive disease.
